Movies in  2011: A Look At What’s Ahead

I had intentions to watch some movies last year and up til June, I was catching a lot of movies, but the problem was that I kind of stopped going out due to having an opposite work schedule from my wife. So some big heavy hitters such as Inception, True Grit and The Social Network were sadly skipped. However, there’s a lot of good coming this year in the way of movies and a lot of them looks like they will be pretty awesome to see. So here’s a few that I’m personally looking forward to:

Cowboys & Aliens: This Wild West sci-fi movie may bleed awesomeness, instead of Indians we get aliens!!! Plus it has Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Sam Rockwell and the movie is directed by Jon Favreau (aka the guy that brought us Iron Man). Releases July 29th

Thor: When it comes to superheroes, Thor kinda seems cool but overall the whole Norse God of Thunder doesn’t usually sound like it belongs with the likes of Spider-man, Wolverine, and Iron Man. So naturally, a Thor movie sounds kind of like a challenge, but after watching the trailer I will raise my goblet of beer and say “Verily so, I shall make haste and watch this fine movie”. Releases July 29th

The Adventures of Tin-Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Despite the dumb sounding name there are a few reasons why this movie should make your “I should watch this” list. First of all it’s a joint-effort between Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Secondly, it’s a cartoonesque movie using the technology of Avatar. And finally, this movie has a great cast such as Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost. Releases December 23rd

X-Men First Class: After the sub-par offering of X-men: The Last Stand and the horribly awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the mutant team needs a win. Fortunately, this movie may be the answer. Set in the 60s, the movie will tell the story of a younger un-handicapped Charles Xavier creating his first team of Mutants. Sounds like a gamble but it’ll be directed by Matthew Vaughn who made Kick-Ass a fun flick. Releases June 3rd

Sherlock Holmes 2: Guy Richie kind of surprised everyone with his steampunk inspired take on Sherlock Holmes 2 years ago. Plus the BBC did their modern day take on Holmes. So Holmes is a hot commodity right now. This time around we’ll meet Sherlock Holmes’ brother (played by Stephen Fry) and his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty (which sadly did not end up being played by Brad Pitt or Daniel Day Lewis as previously rumored). Releases December 16th

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows pt 2: The franchise’s final chapter closes with the second installment based on the final book of the famed boy wizard’s adventures. Pt 1 of this flick was a great movie, but with the upcoming battle of Hogwarts and Harry finally taking on Lord Voldemort, this movie has a lot going for it. Releases July 15th

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: I know that many of you probably lost faith in this franchise 2 movies ago, but I am going to go out on a limb and say it may surprise us. Take into consideration that there’s no more Elizabeth Swan and Will Bloom (Keira Knightly was fun and all, but the Liz & Will Story grew stale) and instead of fighting Krakens and sea monster people, it will be more pirate vs pirate action. Barbossa goes from a “Baustard” to a privateer and Blackbeard will be in it too (the trailer looks decent at least right??). Releases May 20th

Captain America: The First Avenger: Like Thor, Captain America has been a cool looking superhero, but when it came to playing superheroes, the only thing that made the captain cool was his shield. However, in the grand scheme of things, this will be a stepping stone to next year’s mega project “The Avengers”, so it will be worth the watch. Releases July 22nd

The Green Lantern: I know lots and lots of people pumped for this movie. I’m still on the fence on this one for 2 reasons: First the Green Lantern is a weird hero, he has potentially unlimited power with his magic ring, but he is completely powerless against the color yellow (worst weakness ever!), secondly I really was hoping that they’d put Ryan Reynolds in a movie of Deadpool first (think a mix between Wolverine, The Punisher and Spider-man and that’s Deadpool). Anyway I do kinda get pumped on the trailer when he recites the Green Lantern oath. Releases June 17th

Your Highness: This really looks like a quick laugh, but just watching the redband trailer below has me wanting to catch it during matinee hours. Between staring Danny Mcbride (aka Kenny F-ing Powers!!!), James Franco and teasing at a scantly clad pre-knocked up by male ballerina Natalie Portman, this movie will probably be a fun laugh. Releases April 8th

Other Movies:

Mission Impossible 4: OK the only reason I’m watching is that Josh Halloway (aka Sawyer from LOST) is in it and I’m excited to find out what nicknames he gives Tom Cruise. Releases Dec 16th

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon: Stupid name, but no Megan Fox, hopefully it’s not as dumb as the last one. I have my doubts though.  July 1st

Scream 4: Could be good, they have a decade of horror movies to feed from. Releases April 15th

Super 8: JJ Abram’s newest mystery movie. Cloverfield turned out pretty decent so this may be good. TBA 2011 (even the release date is shrouded in mystery)

Sucker Punch: I love Zach Snyder and even though this looks like Grindhouse, it may be awesome. Releases March 21st

Green Hornet: Seth Rogan as a superhero…I’ll watch that. Releases January 14th

Hangover 2: I expect this to fall well below expectations, but it may surprise us. Releases May 26th

Paul: Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are together again, Frost get’s his due “main star” role, but with no Edgar Wright behind the camera it may sadly be it’s downfall. Releases March 18th

Overall, 2011 looks to have some pretty good movies ahead and hopefully these suggestions saves you from being dragged to see the next Twilight movie. Have a fun year at the movies!

PS: Despite this year’s offerings, I can’t wait to get this year over with now that MGM got their crap together and greenlit not only THE HOBBIT but JAMES BOND 23 is going to happen as well!!! Lets hope that the Mayans are wrong about next year because I really want to see these movies.
