Denver Comic-Con 2013 in Review Part 1: Chewbacca Speaks, Meeting Artists/Writers and Disco Nightwing!

dcc 2013Today the doors of the Colorado Convention Center opened to the 2nd ever Denver Comic-con. It’s been a year since the masses assembled to share their mutual love for all things pop-culture and a lot has changed in a year. Last year, Friday was arguably the most dead day of the Con (maybe with the exception of Sunday morning) but this year it seemed that the Con grew..fast! The line wrapped around the entire convention center as opposed to just outside the registration tables as was the case last year. If the 2 hour wait to get in wasn’t enough of a “Head’s Up!” of the con’s growth, you’ll definitely notice a difference once you go inside. I’ve never been to an event that uses the entire convention center, even the Great American Beer Festival (aka Beer heaven) only uses half the exhibit hall, but now the floor is MASSIVE! In addition to the massive exhibit hall, the panels have graduated to using a ball room for main event panels, a much appreciated change for those of us who missed out on the Costume shindig when the room filled up too fast last year. Needless to say, Denver Comic-con hit a pretty big growth spurt this year!

I consider it one of the most funny and clever cartoons out there. I could easily chalk it up to the humor, or the massive pop culture references, but either way, this show has been a constant joy over the years. The show is something of a “what if?’ story focusing on if a very failed middle-aged former Johnny Qwest-like character becomes the single uncaring parent of The Hardy Boys. Of course, instead of the wholesome goodness of the Hardy Boys or Johnny Qwest, we get sex jokes, gratuitous violence, and a nerd-catering influx of pop culture jokes. It does demand something of a patient audience as the animation process sometimes delays the show more than a year or so between seasons. But after a 3 year wait, Team Venture has returned!

To get you up to speed: “Phase One” started with Iron Man then continued on with The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor and concluded with The Avengers. We are now entering “Phase 2” which will include Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and then like before, will end with the follow-up to The Avengers.  After Avengers 2, Marvel studios will launch “Phase 3”. Some titles have already been announced, others are merely rumored. Having read the article, here’s my take on what I think of the announcements:
